Novel insights on the context and potential for upscaling nature restoration under the NRR.
Session II: Evidence-based nature restoration: the big picture
Meet the speakers
Henrique Pereira, Martin-Luther University Leipzig
Henrique is head of the Biodiversity Conservation research group at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany). His research revolves around patterns and processes of global biodiversity change, including monitoring schemes and future scenarios for biodiversity and ecosystem services. He was a coordinating lead author of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the Methodological Assessment on Scenarios and Models of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and the fourth Global Biodiversity Outlook. He is an elected member of the Academia Europaea.
Sabrina Dressel, Wageningen University and Research
Sabrina is an interdisciplinary researcher at Wageningen University, whose research focuses on sustainable natural resource governance under a social-ecological systems perspective. Her work uses a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods that aim to analyse the interlinkages between individuals, society and nature. She also actively engages with stakeholders and decision-makers as part of her research and societal outreach efforts. Sabrina was co-leading researcher of a recent Pan-European study on societal perceptions of ecological restoration.
Almut Arneth, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Almut is a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (Germany) where she leads the Global Land Ecosystem Modelling team. She focuses broadly on how terrestrial ecosystems respond to climate change and land-use change, and explores how natural and managed ecosystems can contribute to climate change mitigation, with co-benefits for adaptation and broader sustainability goals. She is particularly interested in the role of ecosystem processes and services in shaping land-use decisions within socio-ecological systems. Almut has been a lead author for several IPBES and IPCC assessment reports. Her scientific achievements were awarded with the prestigious Leibniz Prize in 2022.
Katharina Faradsch, Prospex Institute
Katharina is principal consultant and researcher at Prospex Institute, Brussels (Belgium). With a background in development cooperation and environmental management, she has coordinated and facilitated stakeholder engagement processes in a wide range of research projects in areas such as ecosystem services and natural capital, renewable energy storage, international food security, resource efficiency, education and training. She has designed and facilitated numerous multi-stakeholder events for research, communication, exchange, and consensus building.
